What Is DEET?

Does DEET Repel Spiders?

DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many repellent products.

It was developed in the 1940s and as such it has been used for repelling insects since ages.

But, it was only found out recently that DEET is effective in repelling not only insects but it also works on SPIDERS, ticks and a host of other pests.

How Does DEET Work?

DEET is an insect and Spider repellent but more than that, it is a confusant.

It confuses the pests because of which they are not able to move towards their favorite fragrance.

It was found that the mere presence of DEET limited the spiders’ movement toward “isoamyl alcohol”, a chemical they are usually attracted to. Moreover, it also limited their avoidance of 2-nonanone, a compound that they normally avoid.

But, the spiders reacted normally to some other chemicals. This research suggested that DEET can interfere with both “good” and “bad” smells, but that it cannot entirely shut down the smelling sensation.

How To Use DEET?

How Does DEET Work for Spiders?

One needs to apply the DEET products onto their skins while taking care to avoid their eyes and ears.

Use the repellent only on your exposed skin and not under clothing.

You can apply it on your face as well but to do so, first spray it on your hands and then rub it on your face.

DO NOT directly spray it on your face as it might affect your eyes.

Can DEET Kill Spiders?

No, DEET is not exactly capable of killing spiders. It is used for repelling purposes only.

Killing the spiders would require different chemicals that we would talk about in our next articles.

DEET can only repel the spiders by altering their olfaction a bit.

Conclusion

We understand how irritating it can be to have a plethora of spiders crawling on the walls of your house.

Hence, we hope our article helped you in dealing with these pesky creatures efficiently using DEET.
